Solidaridad is an organization that is fighting against structural poverty through responsible and sustainable trade. Their latest project focuses on improving the conditions in the small-scale gold mining industry (responsible for 20% of the total gold production) where issues such as child labour, mercury pollution, unfair rewards and unsafe working environments are daily reality.
Solidaridad wants to achieve this by promoting greater responsibility in the gold mining sector and encourage companies to adopt new legislation. In support of this Solidaridad (alongside the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and Fairtrade International (FLO)) introduced the Fairtrade and Fairmined standard (FT-FM). Key aspects of this standard are measures to protect the environment, safety measures for the miners, a better price for the gold and a better legal position of the small-scale miner.
Solidaridad is actively approaching key players in the jewelry industry in order to raise awareness and create demand for “good gold”.
In this light NJC member Mr Brom of Steltman Jeweler invited Solidaridad representatives Erik de Wit and Maaike Schouten to the April conference of the NJC to give a presentation about the FT-FM standard. They mainly focused on the applicability and consequences of the FT-FM standard for the individual jeweler and his or her day-to-day business. All in all it was a very insightful and clarifying presentation for which we would like to thank Solidaridad and their representatives!
